Update on the Maldives

Posted: 01/04/2012 in ONE planet

There was a little-reported armed overthrow of a democratic government in the Maldives at the beginning of February (discussed here). The reason – too democratic. Bigger reason – this was a democratically-elected president who was drawing attention to the fact that his country is being devestated by climate change. Basically, I don’t know when, climate change says there will be no Maldives.

Here he is on Democracy Now 29th March in the live broadcast (click the images to go to site to download):-

and a follow-up broadcast on 29th March post-show:-

I hope there is sufficient public attention on him that he will not return to the Maldives and die.

Check the movie The Island President

Update:-

Despite risking death he returned to the Maldives, and continued to fight democratically for his people. In this Al Jazeera report it shows how the incumbent who came to power by coup is now messing with the voting process. As expected the West is nowhere to be seen crying foul
